Here at Claritas, we like to shine our spotlight on the wonderful staff we have, exploring their roles, their previous experience and also who they are as a person – including their likes and dislikes on everything from reading to sports!
This month we speak to Technical Author, Tom East about his role at Claritas, his career goals and what he gets up to when he’s not busy creating knowledge bases for our services!
Tell us about your role at Claritas
Initially, my focus will be on collating threads of knowledge and information that exist within the company and piecing these together to create documents that will serve as single sources of information. Further down the line, I aim to create external and internal knowledge bases that cover all products and services that Claritas offer and include both video tutorials and written manuals.
What prior experience do you have?
I started working as a Technical Author in 2013 and have amassed 6 years of experience across 3 different companies before beginning work with Claritas.
What would a normal day consist of?
Currently, a normal day consists of collating existing documentation on a product/service, then using this as a base to write comprehensive manuals with updated formatting. In the future, the role will be more varied and will include creating video tutorials and writing different types of documentation – including Best Practice guides and Release Notes.
What is the thing you love most about your job?
As the first Technical Author to work for Claritas, I’m excited by the thought of building up a knowledge base from the ground up and creating a library of information that will be used both internally and externally.
Do you have any advice to give to others looking at a similar career?
Communication is key – it is essential to sharpen these skills in any way possible. The majority of the Technical Authors that I know have degrees in English Literature/Language.
What do you enjoy doing when not at work?
I’m a keen reader (sci-fi for fiction, philosophy books for non-fiction) and also enjoy video games (mainly Overwatch). Before Covid, I used to play football 3 times each week and do boxing twice each week – these days I’m trying to teach myself to paint whilst watching my stomach grow…
Tell us a quirky fact about yourself?
After graduating in 2011, I wasn’t sure what to do with a degree in Literature, so ended up living in Guadalajara, Mexico for two years, teaching English.
Thanks for talking to us, Tom! It’s been great getting to know more about your role here at Claritas and if we need some tips for visiting Mexico, we know where to come!
